March Is Workplace Eye Wellness Month. Your Eyes Called a Meeting…

If your job involves screens, safety goggles, or long hours under bright lights, your eyes are putting in overtime right alongside you.

March is Workplace Eye Wellness Month, a reminder that protecting your vision is not just a “someday” thing. Small habits at work can reduce digital eye strain and help prevent work-related eye injuries.

At North Manhattan Eye Center (NMEC), we see the ripple effect every day: the designer with headaches by 3 PM, the teacher whose eyes burn by lunch, the contractor who “almost” got hit by debris. The good news: most workplace eye issues are preventable with a few practical adjustments.

What is digital eye strain?

Digital eye strain (also called computer vision syndrome) is a collection of symptoms linked to prolonged screen use. Common signs include: tired, burning/itching eyes, dryness, blurry vision, and headaches

It does not mean you have permanent damage, but it does mean your eyes need a smarter workday.

The NMEC Workplace Eye Wellness Checklist

1) Set your screen up like you actually like your future self

A few ergonomic tweaks can make a real difference:

  • Keep your screen about 20 to 26 inches from your eyes and slightly below eye level

  • Reduce glare from windows and overhead lighting (reposition your monitor, soften lighting, or use an anti-glare solution)

  • If you reference papers, use a document holder close to the screen so your eyes are not constantly refocusing

2) Use the 20-20-20 rule (it’s simple and it works)

Every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds. Your eyes reset, your blinking improves, and your focus recovers.

If you want to make it foolproof, set a recurring reminder. Your calendar will finally do something nice for you.

3) Blink on purpose (yes, really)

When we stare at screens, we blink less. Less blinking means drier eyes. If your eyes feel gritty, watery, or irritated at the end of the day, dryness may be the real culprit.

Helpful habits:

  • Blink fully a few times whenever you hit “send”

  • Use breaks to look far away, not at a closer screen

  • Ask us about dry-eye treatment options if symptoms are persistent

4) Consider eyewear that matches your work

Not everyone needs special glasses, but the right lenses can reduce glare and improve comfort for some people, especially for long screen days.

  • Anti-reflective lenses can reduce glare and improve contrast

  • Talk with your eye doctor about whether “computer glasses” make sense for your setup and prescription

(And a quick reality check: many “blue light” claims are more marketing than medicine. The bigger win is better setup and better breaks.)

For job sites, shops, and labs: eye safety is not optional

Workplace eye injuries happen every day in the U.S., and many require medical treatment. OSHA requires employers to provide appropriate eye and face protection when hazards are present.

Wear the right protection for the job, such as:

  • Safety glasses (prescription or non-prescription)

  • Goggles

  • Face shields

  • Welding helmets

  • Full-face respirators

If you work around flying particles, chemicals, vapors, radiation, or intense light, the correct eyewear is a must.

When it’s time to get checked

Some symptoms are “common,” but that does not mean you should normalize them.

Consider scheduling an eye exam if you have:

  • Frequent headaches during or after screen time

  • Blurry vision that comes and goes

  • Burning, dryness, or tearing most days

  • Trouble focusing when shifting from screen to distance

  • Any eye injury or chemical exposure, even if it seems minor

At NMEC, we care for the full spectrum of eye health, from everyday visual comfort to complex conditions, and we’ll help you understand what’s behind your symptoms and what to do next.
